5 Easy Wall Treatments that You Can Actually Do Yourself

Fall is a time for new beginnings. Change and freshness are in the air! It’s the perfect time to change your indoor space in preparation for all the time you will be spending indoors. Sometimes, change can be small, like a new feature wall. Not only can wall treatments refresh the look of your home, they aren't limited to just one wall in a room and can also be used to hide imperfections and mask those unsightly (and outdated) popcorn ceilings. We broke down 5 of our favourite, easy wall treatments to help you make it better.

Wall Trim

Using flat stock trim mouldings to create patterns and add detail to tired walls is an emerging trend that is quickly gaining traction. The idea is to incorporate clean lines in your home by creating lines. Some of our favourite looks include dramatic floor to ceiling squares and diamond pattern walls. Simple or intricate, these wall designs create a stunning feature wall whether they are painted white or a bold colour. Also on the rise, using vertical boards to create a board and batten look. Wood Slats are making a major comeback and we can see why! With the return of natural woods and the ongoing mid-century modern trends taking home design by storm, wood slats are the perfect combo of the two. Wood flat stock trim is perfect for this look, particularly using 1x2 flat stock. Leave it natural or pick your stain. There are so many beautiful pre-mixed options plus you can mix them together to create your own custom stain colour. No matter what pattern you choose, these features walls look custom and bring a chic sense of style to any room.

Paint

Perhaps the easiest wall treatment of all, refreshing the look of your entire home can be as simple as a few coats of paint. What we're seeing for 2023 are more beautiful green shades, like PPG's colour of the year, Vining Ivy. PPG describes this colour as an enchanting deep aqua representing contemporary and traditional styles, perfectly marrying a touch of the past and a taste of the future. Paired with soft colours including neutral tones of blue, grey and even pink, greens are going to be everywhere this year. Colour blocking is still a thing, with a lot of homeowners opting to use geometric shapes to frame a feature, like rectangular paint blocks around wall lights or feature mirrors. Keeping with the clean, minimalistic look, get ready to see mouldings and casing painted the same colour as the wall. Wall Panels

Faux sheet panels to real wood panels, they are all back in a big way. Also making its way back into the modern home, Nickel Gap. Think shiplap but with a gap between boards for a rustic look. Get the Nickel Gap look with our 4' x 8' Orleans panel. Bonus! You can paint it to suit your design. Another sheet panel we're seeing are wood look panels that provide the variated rustic look without the work of staining individual boards. Of course, there are always real wood panels. Stain them, white wash them, the design options are endless and the look and feel you can only get from real wood is timeless. Versatile installation options make this trend work to suit your space. Vertical, horizontal, on a diagonal; one wall or all your walls, paneling is a great way to refresh your walls and ceilings too! Tongue and groove pieces make installing wood paneling a breeze.

Design Tip: If you have low ceilings or a small space, keep lines vertical to draw the eye up and make the room feel taller than it is and remember to keep the colour light and bright, like the white-washed pine ceiling shown below.

Stone

The natural beauty of stone adds texture and interest to a room. Elements found in nature are trending right now and stone helps introduce a natural element to any space. Stone can also provide a spa like feel and is perfect for any room in your home, where you would want to achieve a Zen like space. It also looks grand in an entry way, adding a natural welcoming texture. We're seeing stone around focal points – like the television or fireplace, where people will be looking anyway. Today's lighter weight stone veneers make installation less work that traditional stone and take the guesswork out of laying out patterns for a uniform and clean look.

Shiplap

Clean and timeless, shiplap creates an elegant and cozy feel on walls and ceilings. We love how versatile it is – it works in mudrooms, bathrooms, you name it. Shiplap has been on trend for a while and continues to stick around. Ours is primed and ready to be painted so you can go with white (or increasingly popular, off-white), go bold or paint it black. You can paint it any colour - we colour match too so bring in your swatches! Shiplap is super easy to install too, featuring tongue and groove and a nail line – simply nail through the nail line identified on the tongue of each board and this will ensure that the nail heads are hidden when the next piece is installed over top. Simple, classic, clean and still the number one wall trend.
